How to Advertise a Dropshipping Business (The Right Way)

Author:

Marketing a dropshipping store can be one of the most daunting and overwhelming aspects of building a business. This is because there are so many different platforms on which you can market your store, and everyone has their own tactics and strategies for each platform.

In this article, I’ve provided the most effective marketing strategies and the platforms you should consider for advertising, depending on the products or niche you’re selling.

The first step in creating a marketing strategy is to conduct market research to identify your ideal customer. This involves gathering as much information as possible about your main customer base and using this data to help you decide on the best strategy.

This doesn’t have to involve surveys or focus groups. Your market research can simply involve checking out blogs, YouTube videos, forums, social media, and visiting other e-commerce stores within your niche.

Ideally, you want to learn all you can about your target audience—from the way they talk and the vocabulary they use to their problems and desires.

Knowing your audience will help you create ads that resonate with them and enable you to better understand which marketing direction will be most effective for your business.

The Best Free Advertising Strategies

If you’re looking to create a long-term, dropshipping store business, free advertising should be part of your overall marketing strategy. The downside is free marketing methods take longer to drive traffic to your store compared to paid options, but they can be highly effective over time.

Below are some of the most effective free advertising options for a dropshipping store.

1. SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is how your store can be found within Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs) when people type in specific keywords. While it can take some time—since Google won’t rank new websites until they have proven to be reputable businesses—SEO is one of the most powerful techniques for driving free organic traffic to your store once established.

SEO can be very in-depth, but for a dropshipping store, it doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some important steps every store you include:

  • Provide unique and high-quality images.
  • Write unique product descriptions.
  • Use a fast and user-friendly Shopify theme such as Booster
  • Avoid using spammy pop-ups.

Ultimately, Google wants you to provide a quality experience for its users. If you use the same content, imagery, and theme as other stores in the same niche, Google has no reason to think you are providing a premium customer experience.

Creating a blog is another effective method of adding value for your customers and driving traffic to your store, which Google appreciates. Even if you’re not a writer, there are many writing services that can produce affordable content within your niche.

Another important SEO tactic that many e-commerce stores neglect is establishing E-E-A-T (Expertise Expreience, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). This is a substantial topic and could warrant a course by itself. Basically, Google wants to be sure you are a legitimate business before it will trust your site in its SERPs.

Any legitimate business on Google will have an address, phone number, multiple emails, and a Google My Business profile. Additionally, they expect to see pages within your store such as “About Our Company” and “About the Founder” that describe you and your business.

Below is an example of an “About Us” page done the right way. Not only does it build trust with your audience, it helps Google trust you which results in more organic traffic for your business.

These pages build trust and inform Google that if a customer has a problem with your business, they know who is responsible and how to contact you.

2. Email Marketing

Many stores neglect email marketing because they assume you can’t retarget customers in a dropshipping store. This is a mistake.

The vast majority of products have some kind of variant, accessory, related product, or newer version that can be sold to your previous customers. You’ve already paid to acquire these customers, and you want recurring sales from them.

Email marketing has one of the highest returns on investment (ROI) of any kind of marketing. Although it’s not entirely free, it comes at a relatively low cost compared to the potential returns it can generate for your business.

The beauty of email marketing for a one-product or niche specific dropshipping store is that it can be highly personalized and specific to your audience. You’re targeting an audience that has already purchased from you and trusts your business.

Once you create a large list of potential customers through email marketing, that list is yours and is extremely valuable. If you build a following on any other social media or e-commerce platform, it can be taken away from you at any moment if that platform bans you for any reason.

With email, you can create targeted campaigns, and no one can take that list away from you. You can reach out to these customers for recurring sales for years to come.

3. Social Media Marketing

Social media can be a time-consuming part of any e-commerce business, involving regular and valuable posts to your customer base within your niche.

The platforms to focus on include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, or any others that resonate with your audience. It really depends on your product and the interests and demographics of your customers.

For example, Pinterest can be a powerful marketing tool if the main audience for your product is female. According to Pinterest, 76% of its users are female. Pinterest is also a very visual platform, so any aesthetically pleasing or “wow factor” product will be ideal.

Below is an example of paid and free Pinterest pins to drive traffic to your store.

Social media is most effective for niche dropshipping stores that have an enthusiast market. If your product targets any kind of sports, hobbies, or passionate customer base, social media will play an important role in marketing.

On the other hand, if your products are a necessity or its primary use is to solve a problem, social media may not be a necessary marketing tactic for your business.

4. Create a YouTube Channel

Creating a YouTube channel may be one of the most effective and underutilized free marketing strategies for e-commerce businesses. However, the effectiveness of this will depend on the type of products you’re selling.

If your product is limited in its uses and functionality, YouTube may not work for your business. However, if your products can be used in several ways or can generate a lot of entertaining user-generated content (UGC), then YouTube can be a game-changer as I’ve seen many stores explode with this tactic.

One of the largest and most successful one-product stores is BlendJet, which has over 500 videos and 45,000 subscribers on its YouTube channel. They offer a ton of videos on various smoothie recipes, behind-the-scenes looks at their company, and testimonials from customers who have lost weight using their product.

Another example is a niche store called Lettuce Grow, which sells a unique self-watering vertical garden. Their YouTube channel features videos with recipes using the produce grown with their product, as well as tutorials and general information on growing fruits and vegetables.

Check these channels out as it can provide you with some inspiration and ideas to help drive traffic to your store in a unique way that most other dropshippers aren’t utilizing.

The Most Effective Ways of Driving Traffic to a New Dropshipping Store

Once you’ve launched your dropshipping store, paid advertising is an effective way to drive traffic to your store immediately. It is a different strategy from free advertising and will require significant optimization and testing to fully understand the best platforms to advertise on and the most effective ads to run.

1. Meta Ads

Meta is one of the most popular platforms for running ads for dropshipping businesses that sell lower-cost, impulse-buy products. People use Meta as a social media platform, not necessarily to search for products.

It can be challenging to convince people to purchase if they are not actively looking to buy. However, persuading them to buy a $25 product is much easier than selling a $250 item to someone who wasn’t already searching for it.

I would only recommend using Meta ads for a dropshipping business if the product has a very specific audience and is valued under $100.

Another factor to consider is the primary demographics of your product. Meta tends to have an aging user base, making baby and pet products two very popular niches for advertising on the platform. I’ve had a lot of success with running paid ads on Meta with baby and pet products.

Often, parents and grandparents will buy baby items and toys that are unique and they may not have seen before. It’s similar with pet supplies, most animal lovers can’t resist a unique and adorable pet product they haven’t seen before.

These niches are also great for user-generated content (UGC). If you can offer your customers future discounts in exchange for posting an image or video of their pet with a product you sold them, it’s essentially free advertising for you.

2. Google Advertising

Google Ads work very differently from social media paid advertising strategies. The main difference is that there is search intent behind the ad. Think about it: if there’s a new product you want to buy online, most of us Google the product.

You are then presented with a list of products for sale at the top of the screen—these are Google ads. These types of ads have high conversion rates because the people who see them are actively looking to buy. However, they often cost more than ads on other platforms.

Because of the cost and effectiveness of Google Ads, they are most effective with higher-ticket products. Products valued over $100 will usually be in the optimal price range for Google marketing.

Google Ads can be challenging initially because there is a lot to learn. It will take some testing before your ads are fully optimized, but they require less ongoing work once they are set up compared to other paid marketing options.

3. TikTok Advertising

TikTok works in a similar way to Meta and requires you to interrupt the user and advertise to someone who is not necessarily looking for your product.

Advertising regular, everyday products on these platforms will not work. You need to grab the user’s attention quickly with an ad that stops them from scrolling through their feed.

The best part of TikTok and Meta is that you can target very specific audiences who you know will be interested in your product.

For example, if you are selling a golf product, you can target a specific gender, age group, and interests, making it more likely they will purchase your product. You can advertise to users who are interested in a specific golf magazine or are fans of a famous golfer.

Obviously, TikTok has a much younger demographic than Meta, so understanding your main customer base will be essential. A product such as a massage chair for arthritis would be better suited to Facebook than TikTok.

4. Instagram Influencers

Instagram and Meta are connected, which allows you to target the same audience based on the data you have on Meta. This is powerful because it enables you to focus your ads on audiences that you know have an interest in and a desire to buy your products.

One of the biggest opportunities in marketing is working with influencers, and Instagram is an excellent platform for partnering with them. You can reach out to influencers within your niche who have small to medium followings and ask them to help promote your product.

Depending on the size of their following, it can be one of the most cost-effective methods of marketing your product. Many influencers with smaller followings are often happy to recommend your product in exchange for receiving it for free, while others may request a one-time payment or a percentage of the sales.

The reason this type of marketing is so effective is that their followers often trust and aspire to be like them. Seeing someone they look up to use a specific product within a niche they are passionate about allows them to visualize themselves using the product.

Conclusion

I wish I could provide you with the best marketing strategy for your dropshipping store, but unfortunately, it will differ for everyone. The type of product you sell, your main customer base, the country you’re selling to, your budget, and many other factors will impact your strategy.

While the options discussed above are very effective and popular among e-commerce sellers, there are a few other alternatives you might consider. Platforms like Snapchat or Taboola offer cost-effective advertising options. Additionally, affiliate marketing can be a low-cost way to drive traffic to your store if your profit margins allow for it.

Another choice is selling on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and eBay. However, I would personally avoid these options as part of your marketing strategy. The most successful dropshipping stores are branded, and building a brand should be part of your overall plan.

This approach helps increase your product’s perceived value and maximizes your profit margin. Advertising on Amazon and eBay can decrease the overall perception of your brand and devalue your product.

It will require a lot of testing with various platforms and ad creatives before you are able to pinpoint the most optimal marketing strategy for your e-commerce business.
